The cornerstone of the college, the SIU University Farms is a 2,000 acre on-campus working farm and forest system that serves as the hands-on classroom for teaching, research, and outreach.
A team of students led by a researcher at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is one of just 15 nationwide finalists for the U.S. Department of Energy AlgaePrize 2023-2025 Competition. And if the Carbondale team succeeds, its project could be used to grow crops in off-Earth environments such as its moon and Mars.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale strengthened its commitment to students in northern Illinois with an agreement to bring the expertise of a doctoral research university to qualified Joliet Junior College students by providing the option to earn their bachelor’s degrees remotely and at a lower cost in 12 academic programs.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s spring 2024 enrollment is up almost 4% – 401 students – compared to last year. This follows a fall that saw the first enrollment growth since 2014.
