The Equine Center is part of the University Farms system and is located approximately three miles southwest of the main campus. Used extensively for both research and teaching, our horse herd contains approximately 50 animals and a variety of breeds, ages and talents.
The Center is located at one of the most scenic sites on campus where SIU Carbondale horses enjoy over 100 acres of pasture. Facilities include a 32-stall barn, student lounge, teaching laboratory (located at the lower barn – Metabolism/Physiology Center), indoor and outdoor riding arenas, round pens and a breeding shed. The center has 1-2 onsite stallions for hands on learning opportunities and breeding. Each year the center offers foals for sale to help support the center.
The Equine Center also offers pasture and stall boarding opportunities to students as well as the public.
Activities & Events:
The Equine Center is home to horseback riding and horse training classes. Students are expected to assist with the daily care of the horses.
The Equine Center hosts various events each year, including 4-H judging competitions, horse short courses, located at the Equine Teaching and Research Unit (ETRU) and summer camps. The students also participate in AG career day and outreach activities.
