Dan Nickrent, one of our Emeritus Plant Biologist with the Department of Plant Biology who specializes in Plant Molecular Systematics and Evolution recently published a paper in the American Journal of Botany. This is what he had to say: “It's finally out, our magnum opus on the evolution of inflorescences in the sandalwood order! It was a long and winding road to get here, but satisfying in the end. And it is pleasing that my photo artwork was chosen for the cover of this issue of the journal!

This paper is particularly significant to me because it includes Job Kuijt as coauthor - "Mr. Parasitic Plants". Job's career spanned over 60 years and he published several hundred papers and books on the subject. Because of health issues, he told me that this will be the last paper of his career. I feel honored to have had him on-board with this publication that, to me, represents the combination of “old and new” in terms of scientific methodology, not to mention intergenerational cooperation.

For those who do not have access to the journal, here is a link to the article in PDF format he was gracious enough to provide. I also took some liberty in cropping the journal cover’s original artwork to fit our banner. You can see the full cover in the link to the right. In addition, Dan has compiled supporting documentation should you wish to take a look.

Congratulations, Dan!
