Microbiology

Microbiology, the study of microorganisms, is of major importance to our lives. Although unseen to the naked eye, microorganisms are the driving force behind the chemical cycles that run the planet and our own bodies. As we learn more about microbial life forms, we can apply this knowledge to advance the sciences of medicine and technology, making the world a better place.

Microbiology stresses experimental rather than descriptive approaches to research in the fields of bacteriology, virology, and immunology. As a basic science, microbiology provides the means for discovering the intricacies that govern all life processes. As an applied science, microbiology is used to solve problems in medicine, agriculture, bioremediation and the food industries. As a result, the field of microbiology is vigorous and growing rapidly, making it an ideal major for many students.

Microbiology offers an undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree and a graduate program leading to the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degrees. An undergraduate degree in microbiology is excellent preparation for a career in research and for the competitive graduate and professional school application process. A graduate degree in microbiology diversifies and enhances your career opportunities tremendously. Regardless of your immediate goal, Microbiology will help to enable your future by providing the knowledge and experience to perform modern microbiological research.
